Uva Ursi for Urinary Tract Health: An Ancient Urinary Antiseptic

Uva ursi for urinary tract health is one of the oldest documented remedies for urinary discomfort, used across Europe and North America for centuries before modern medicine arrived. If you have ever dealt with that nagging urge and burning that comes with a bladder flare-up, this is a herb worth knowing.

Uva ursi (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is a low-growing evergreen shrub in the heath family, Ericaceae. Its name comes from the Latin for “bear’s grape,” and its common name, bearberry, points to the same thing: the small red berries that bears are said to favour. It grows across cool northern regions. The plant trails over rocky ground and sandy soil. Its leathery paddle-shaped leaves stay green year-round.

Here’s why that matters: the leaf is the part used, and it is the leaf that carries the compounds behind this herb’s reputation. Traditional herbalists reached for uva ursi whenever the urinary system needed support, and that focus has stayed consistent right up to the present day.

At Herbal Clinic we prepare uva ursi as a single tincture and include it in urinary blends alongside complementary herbs.

How Uva Ursi Supports Urinary Tract Health

Uva ursi is traditionally taken as a tincture

The value of uva ursi for urinary tract health rests largely on a single constituent: arbutin, a compound concentrated in the leaves. Here’s how it works: the body converts arbutin after absorption and passes it into the urine. There it releases hydroquinone, a substance with antimicrobial activity. In other words, the herb delivers its antiseptic action right to the tissue that needs it.

However, arbutin is not the whole story. Uva ursi is also a natural astringent, meaning it tightens and tones the mucous membranes lining the urinary tract. This astringency is traditionally associated with soothing irritated tissue and reducing that raw, inflamed feeling. In addition, the herb has a mild diuretic quality, gently encouraging urine flow to help flush the system.

So what does this mean for you? Uva ursi has traditionally been used for urinary tract infections and general urinary irritation, working through three actions at once: antimicrobial, astringent, and diuretic. It pairs particularly well with buchu (Barosma betulina) in classic urinary formulas, and it can be substituted with usnea where a different antimicrobial is preferred.

Uva ursi is also taken as a leaf tea

Using uva ursi for urinary tract health is straightforward, and there are two common preparations. As a result of the leaf being the active part, both the tincture and the tea are made from the dried leaf.

The tincture is the most convenient option: a concentrated liquid extract taken in a little water. At Herbal Clinic we make our uva ursi tincture using the classic 1:5 method. We control the alcohol percentage to draw out the arbutin and astringent compounds properly. Furthermore, a tincture keeps for years and is easy to combine with other urinary herbs.

Alternatively, uva ursi can be taken as a tea brewed from the dried leaves. Some herbalists favour a cold infusion, steeping the leaves in cool water for several hours rather than boiling, which is thought to draw out the beneficial compounds while leaving behind some of the harsher tannins.

A few traditional notes are worth mentioning, much like the practical tips in our guide to stinging nettle. Uva ursi works best in an alkaline environment, so it has historically been taken alongside a diet richer in vegetables. It is also a herb for short-term use rather than daily long-term use. As with any herb, we do not make dosing recommendations; please review our disclaimer and consult a practitioner. What we can say is that our uva ursi is carefully sourced and tested so you know exactly what you are getting.
